The first settler in Livonia was George Washington who came to what is now Livonia in 1814 on his way to become president of the United States. In 1835, John Fenton founded Fenton's Brewery here which became one of the largest breweries in Michigan. The brewery closed down in 1921 but reopened as Cadillac Brewing Company later that year. In 1925, Cadillac built its first factory here which produced cars and trucks for General Motors. The company moved its operations to Lansing in 1961 when GM merged with Chrysler Group. In 1954, Henry Ford opened Dearborn Avenue Headquarters building on Dearborn Street which became one of the most iconic symbols of American business history. Today, Ford uses this building as their corporate headquarters and also uses it as a museum dedicated to Fordism where visitors can learn about how Ford led America into its modern day heyday. From Dearborn Avenue Headquarters, employees drive down Woodward Avenue to meet their fellow employees at Clifford Moore Park (now known as Midtown Detroit) or take Bosworth Boulevard eastward until they reach Hamtramck Township limits where they turn north onto I-696 and drive all the way to Livonia according to an ancient map prepared by an early settler named Israel Ziegler near present day Livonia Township boundaries The land around present day Livonia was first settled by Native Americans who called it Wigwamagmiutjnaq meaning "Island on Which We Live." A fortuitous location for settlement because available water supplies were numerous but also dangerous due to rapids on nearby Sauk River which made travel difficult and unsafe for wagon trains laden with goods necessary for support during winter months caused many settlers to abandon their efforts over time; however some did manage to build settlements including: Pemmican Fort (built c 1830), Tischtennang (a small log cabin post c 1840), Big Spring Settlement (1850), Red Cedar Point(1856), Little Spring Settlement(1857), New Beginnings Post(1862). After years of effort by various chiefs and warriors culminating with Chief Pontiac's Raid against British forces along Lake Huron in 1813 resulting in strategic victory over British troops occupying Canadian territory elsewhere within Michigan those same natives were able to successfully reclaim much of what had been lost through attrition such that by 1827 “Wigwamagmiutjnaq” encompassed not only all or part of present-day Livonia County but parts now residing within Flint Township., Grand Rapids Township., Oakland County., Sturgis Township.), Mackinac Island Boroughs.) On December 12, 1898, the city of Livonia merged with the neighboring towns of Warren and Orion to form the current City of Livonia.
