Livonia is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 54,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Livonia County. The municipality has a total area of 21.1 square miles (55 km2). The first Europeans to Visit Livonia were French explorers in 1795. In 1812, General James Wilkinson built Fort Dearborn on the site of what is now Union Station in honor of his defeated Napoleon I's Grande Armée during their Invasion of America campaign. After the war, General Wilkinson continued to make donations to various causes and named one street after him – Wilkinson Boulevard – while he lived in Livonia. In 1825, George Stephenson started building the railway from Detroit to Lansing and purchased land for the line at what is now Elmira Road and State Street north of downtown. He called it "the great Western Railway". The first train reached Livonia on November 15, 1827; it was pushed by four horses and took eighteen hours to reach Detroit via Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids. George Stephenson also donated land for a courthouse and jail on Main Street east of town; this structure still stands today as part of courthouse Square. In 1830 thenceforth all municipal government was through village form with an elected board known as "the trustees." The first school in Livonia was taught by Mr. Ewing from a log cabin near what is now Fourth Avenue South between Woodward Avenue and River Road northwest of town limits – this school burned down in 1836 but was rebuilt two years later with brick materials from nearby Mount Pleasant Township utilizing funds provided by George Stephenson himself! A new courthouse was completed in 1840 which served as the interim home for most local government until permanent buildings could be erected around that time including: First Methodist Church (1841), Masonic Lodge #5 (1846), Bank Building (1847-49), Female College (1850-51), Post Office Building (1853-54) & Town Hall Annexe (1857). Although much older than most places within livonia today, these structures are some notable examples within its history because they were all built specifically for local government use rather than being replicated or copied elsewhere throughout lower peninsula communities like Flint/Dearborn or Kalamazoo/Norton Hills which developed more centralized forms OFgovernmentmuch later.(See diagram below) Livoniians have long been proud citizens who have contributed importantly to their community both inside & outside thereof - whether it be through service members or activeduty military personnel stationed here countrywide or those hailing from here locally such as Sgt./Maj./Lt., Ace Cpl., 2nd Lt., Captains etc...
