The first ammunition was fired in Livonia in 1795 by Capt. John Kirby of the USS Constitution. The USS Constitution was an American warship that fought in the Revolutionary War. Captain Kirby shot cannonballs out of the ship's rigging to defend against British attack. In 1868, Major General George Armstrong Custer was killed during an action at Little Bighorn Creek near present-day Livonia. His cavalry unit was besieging a Sioux camp on the bank of the creek when they were attacked by Native Americans using bows and arrows. Some of Custer's officers carried their commanders' guns overland to engage the Indians while others reloaded their cannons on horseback, but all were killed or captured when they crossed into Sioux Territory beyond the reach of Indian fire. Captain Samuel Slater built a flour mill on this site in 1870 after purchasing land from James Kelly for $1,000 cash. Slater started production of flour with his mill until 1875 when he sold it to Jethro Gibbs for $10,000$. In 1876, John Haggerty founded Haggerty Oil & Gas Company on this site with his brother Amos Haggerty Sr.. The company produced gasoline and oil products until 1959 when it merged with Mobil Corporation to form ExxonMobil Corporation . In 1984, US Steel closed its plant in Gary, Indiana due to steel productivity problems caused by deregulation of industry . This left Livonia as one of only two Michigan cities without a major steel manufacturing center since World War II . Consequently, much progress has been made in developing alternative industries such as information technology and engineering services throughout Livonia since then including new housing developments such as Park East neighborhood which is home to many high-tech companies like Intel , Microsoft and AMD . Today there are over 100 businesses operating withinlivania employing more than 4200 individuals who contribute significantly to local economy . With growing trade and industry, Livonia also began to grow politically with two local members serving in Congress from 1857 to 1861 and 1870 to 1871; both men were future Mayor Fenton Dixon. In 1865, when Lansing became the capital of newly formed Michigan, Livonia became its second largest city with over 10,000 residents; this growth continued until World War II when it decreased to 619 residents due to increased development outside of downtown: residential subdivisions along present-day I-696 (the "Michigan Turnpike"), Interstate 275 (now called M-1), new highways built through rural areas east of Lansing which cut off access to Livonia Airport (then known as Battle Creek Airlines Field) and other points north andwest of town. Livonia experienced significant growth following World War II as many veterans returned home from military service in Europe or Japan; this influx led to more businesses opening up within downtown while housing prices rose sharply around Market Street creating concentrations of wealth within one area rather than throughout the entire community like they had earlier done elsewhere in centralMichigan; however some aspects typical of post-war suburban living such as high school students' out-of school suspensions increasing markedly followed similar trends throughout much Midwestandom
