Scope mounts (also called "telescopic" mounts) are a type of mount that allow the photographer to place his or her camera in a higher position than normal. This is accomplished by attaching a telescopic tube (known as a Sokol, Russian for "stick") to the camera body and extending it into an available space on the ground, typically within view of the subject. With suitable camera optics, it is possible to place objects several hundred feet away from the lens and still capture images that are both sharp and detailed. Lincoln Park was home to one of the first scope mounts when it opened its doors in 1916. The park was located just north of downtown Detroit on I-96 between Woodward and Gratiot Streets. It had been vacant for years and was in need of restoration. The Lincoln Park Scope Mount Committee was formed to design, build, operate and maintain a new scope mount at the park. The originalscope mount consisted of two metal plates with three rubber rings around them which were used to secure the camera to the tripod while in use. Today, we can still see these legacy mounts today at Lincoln Park as part of our visitor experience!
