Bullets in Lincoln Park date back to 1867, when a military officer named George Armstrong Custer was killed in what is now Wyoming. His regiment, the Seventh Cavalry, was stationed at Fort Dearborn. One of his comrades carried his body home with him on horseback and buried it in a plot near the park. In 1902, the park opened to the public and bullet holes were found all over it. For many years they were treated as if they were simply decoration on existing buildings and infrastructure. However, in 1978 bullets from an assassination attempt against President John F Kennedy were discovered hidden inside a tree near the east edge of the park. Since then bullets have been regularly found and cleaned up in Lincoln Park - one of the most Rifle-rich places in America!

The first site for Lincoln Park was a small piece of forest east of present-day I-75 across from what is now Ford Field. In 1892, the Lincolns donated 160 acres (68 ha) to create the park to honor both their husbands. The first house in the park was built in 1895 on land that still stands next to Gratiot Avenue and Interstate 75. Municipal services were provided within the boundaries of Lincoln Park until 1904 when they were centralized at East Jefferson Road and Cass Street in Detroit. In 1916, part of what is now Old Fort Dearborn National Historic Site was annexed into the city limits making it an integral part of Lincoln Park as well. In 1933, following passage of Prohibition, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered that all federal lands be put back into Federal ownership status and turned over to state government control so that state alcohol prohibition could continue without interruption or conflict with federal law. This order led to much public outcry including protests by supporters of prohibition who felt that national parks should remain unoccupied during this time period because they were considered "national treasures." After some discussion within Congress, FDR lifted prohibition in 1933 and allowed states to implement their own liquor laws however, Ulysses S. Grant's original 989 acre (3 km²) parcel adjoining Elmwood Cemetery continues as part of Civil War Battlefield National Monument which preserves many battlefield remains near downtown Detroit
