Lincoln Park is a large and popular park in the city of Detroit, Michigan. It was first opened in 1892 as part of the Warrendale development. The park has a total area of over 235 acres and is home to a variety of public services, including a gym, tennis courts, playgrounds, and a number of businesses. In addition to its recreational and educational opportunities, Lincoln Park also provides an important focus for community-based programming. Lincoln Park is located along the eastern border of Detroit on the west side of Woodward Avenue between Gratiot Avenue and Cass Ave. The park was originally named after Abraham Lincoln, who had officially become President of the United States just two years earlier in 1868. As part of its commemoration program for the centennial year of Mr. Lincoln's life in 1862-1865, the City Council dedicated Lincoln Park on October 15th, 1892. The initial land for Lincoln Park was donated by Augustus Hickey who also developed Warrendale Boulevard which runs parallel to it on one side and Gratiot Avenue on the other. At that time there were no sidewalks or streetlights so citizens walked or bicycled around their neighborhoods using open spaces like these today. Over time more areas were annexed to make up what now makes up Lincoln Park - including current east streets Edwards (now Halsted), State Street (now Grand River), Allendale (now Harrison), Franklin Road (now I-405), North Side (now Jefferson) - but it all started with this large piece of undeveloped land at the corner of Woodward Ave./Cass Ave., just east from where Warrendale Boulevard now meets Gratiot Ave.. Avenue Menards Supermarket later moved into space vacated by Cadillac dealership at this intersection back in 1927 A map from that date shows three Ford dealerships; one each at Hastings/Dearborn/Eaton Streets; one at Belle Isle/Harrison Rd.; One at Woodward/ Cass allowed for growth as more people drove into downtown...This triangular site would become known as "Lincoln" after President Abraham LINCOLN because he visited Detroit twice during his first term! Ford Motor Company began marketing their cars here starting with Model T’s in 1908two years before they became available nationwide
