Lincoln Park is a large, contiguous park in the city of Detroit, Michigan. It was first established in 1892 as a public square on the north side of Woodward Avenue between Gratiot and I-94. The initial design included an area for football and baseball games, but those were discontinued after only a few seasons. In 1902, the park was combined with other parcels east of Gratiot to form what is now Dearborn Heights. The original structures within the park date back to 1892: The Neely House (now known as the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library) was built on land donated by early settler James Neely; and Clinton School (now known as Eastern High School) was constructed on land donated by General Lucius Clay. The first golf course in Michigan opened at Lincoln Park in 1907, and it has been run continuously since then. In 1920, Mayor George W. Dickenson designated Lincoln Park one of six sites selected for construction of the National Fairgrounds across the country under President Woodrow Wilson’s New Deal program. As part of that project, money was raised from private donors to build new fairgrounds near downtown Detroit and Highland Park – Lincoln Park served as primarily temporary home until Highland Park became available in 1934 after Henry Ford's purchase of an adjacent parcel nearby. The fairgrounds were eventually abandoned due to budgetary limitations during World War II and replaced with parking lots for the city’s burgeoning automotive industry. With its newly restored structures and reopened facilities in 2007, Lincoln Park experienced significant redevelopment over the past few years following a $5 million investment from local philanthropist David Mayslip II along with support from City Hall and other government entities includingDetroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s office. This effort saw a variety of programming implemented including music concerts*, theatrical productions* & events such as model trains & carnival rides*. Some key improvements have included dedicated bike lanes*, new lighting system* & more than 2 million square feet (210 metric tons) of retail/residential space.* *These events are not necessarily associated with specific months or years
