Lansing experienced significant growth during World War II due to its location as a major military airfield within easy reach by drove westward into central Michigan via I-96W through Essex Junction before rejoining I-96W just north of downtown Lansing near US 31/24 mile marker on October 15th 1945 following World War II Victory Over Japan Day Memorial Service celebrated at Harding Park across I-96W from where Japanese Americans serving in the U.S Armed Forces remained until their forcible repatriation under Executive Order 9066 on April 26th 1951 followed by public protestations until that date throughout much central Michigan including eastern Cass Township near US 231/231 mile marker) . After the war ended in 1946 there continued rapid growth with 1 million people living here by 1950 primarily due to postwar baby boomer migration along with various industrial plant relocations throughout central Michigans entire metropolitan area brought about primarily by General Motors(GM), Ford Motor Company(FORD), Chrysler Corporation(CHRYSLER), United States Steel Corporation(US Steel), American Electric Power(AEP) & other large companies who vacated older plants or closed down operations while continuing major research & development activities at their facilities creating many high tech jobs that continue up into present day .....
