Lansing, Michigan is a city in the US state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County and was founded on November 3, 1837, by James K. Polk. The population was 98,651 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Lansing was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Tribe before European settlers arrived in what is now Michigan in 1734. The settlements that were established around what are now Lansing and East Lansing were named after George Washington or other key figures from American history: Livingston (1836), Clinton (1840), and Harrison (1848). In 1837, President James K. Polk appointed John Loughlin as the first Mayor of Lansing with authority to purchase land for development and build infrastructure such as roads and schools. Lansing became part of the newly created state of Michigan on December 12, 1847, following its creation from parts of Indiana and Ohio. On January 14, 1861, during the American Civil War, General Lew Wallace's division attacked two Union forts at Ironton Heights near present-day Lansing while under orders from Union General Ulysses S Grant; this attack led to major losses for both sides and resulted in Wallace being court-martialed and discharged from service with disgrace. At some point between 1865–1867 a new town hall was constructed northeast of downtown Lansing; it burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt as a public building which still stands today. On November 3, 1837, James K. Polk organized a group of men called "The Erectors", who set out to build a town on land donated by prominent resident David Ransom Dodgehams southeast of downtown Lansing to serve as the county seat for Washtenaw County. The first post office opened in Lafayette Township on November 10th with Wm Higgs serving as the first Clerk/Postmaster/Recorder/ Treasurer; within weeks another post office had been opened inEast Lansing at Flint Street Station with Chas Aiken serving as Clerk/Postmaster/Recorder & Treasurer until his death on October 9th 1840 due to yellow fever contracted while working near Mexico City about 100 miles south of Detroit]. The name "Lansing" would not be given to our current city until after it had been annexed into larger Detroit by Wayne County when it merged into that county on February 14th 1947 (). In 1842 John Loughlin erected an adobe jail which served as an interim courthouse until a more permanent structure could be built adjacent to Duffield Creek Road east ofpresent day State Route 2339). By 1850 there were also taverns located around what is now downtown Lansing providing social lubrication for local farmers who gathered here during planting season; these venues continue up through present day nightlife activity along Duffield Creek Rd., just eastsideof MLK Jr Blvd., between Brush Park Rd& First Ave NW affectionately known locally simply as "The Ghetto". Polk arrived at what is now known as Belle Isle with their forces to celebrate their victory over Native Americans at Battle Of The Thames near Ottawa Landing on November 3 that year during what would become known as the American Civil War (1861-1865).General Custer's group included six men - three officers and three enlisted men - including himself; he died eight days later from wounds received while fighting at Cold Harbor Battlefield east of Petersburg VA..The new settlement began to form soon after its foundation with traders settling here for goods brought downriver by boat or land route from Lake Superior including fish caught off Mackinac Island and salmon caught near Sault Ste Marie In 1881, when Lansing lost its status as a village due to prohibitionist policies enacted by then Mayor John Prentice Howe it became one of several townships within Wayne County which were organized into divisions under Township Manager Hiram J Dearborn effective March 1st following up petitions from citizens seeking township organization since they felt they were being left out of decisions affecting other parts of Wayne County On July 1 1912 when Lansing became a city it elected mayor Harry Wigington who would serve until 1935 During World War II – 1945 many families moved into downtown for wartime service but most residents returned home once hostilities ended One example was Mrs Dorothy Fenton who took up residence in an abandoned building on State Street just south of Gratiot Avenue during Wartime .
