Lansing, Michigan was the home of the Kalamazoo Arsenal from 1814-1864. This arsenal was located on present day State Fairgrounds and produced military rifles, pistols and shotguns. The first firearms were made at this location in 1814. In 1836, the armament works moved to a new site in what is now downtown Lansing. It remained there until 1862 when it moved again to its current location on Capitol Hill.

Lansing (population: 158,000) is the capital of Michigan and the second most populous city in the United States after New York City. It is located in the central region of the state on the Ohio River. The area that now makes up Lansing was first drafted as part of a land grant to James K. Polk from Congress on October 14, 1837. The site chosen for Lansing was a location near Ottawa County on the right bank of the river, just east of present-day East Lansing and south of Grand Rapids. The townships around Lansing were annexed by Lansing Township on December 5, 1847. In 1855, when Michigan became a state, it added Lansing to its borders as well as Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Township to form modern-day Lansing Township. On February 17, 1867, it was made into a municipality with a population of 21,675 people under its jurisdiction and served as such until May 3rd when it became an unincorporated community once again with no municipal government. Lansing's history can be traced back to 1837 when Congress awarded James K. Polk a land grant for what would become known as "Lansing". At that time, much of lower Michigan was still Rupert's Land which had been granted to Canada by Great Britain following their war with France in 1763-64. Canadian officials claimed that they never received permission from France to take this land so India took over Rupert's Land while Canada continued claim to all but 2 percent of what is now Michigan - making "Lansing" one of those lands which passed through various hands before finally arriving at American shores via James K. Polk's gift enrollment in October 11th year following his election as President Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President on November 3rd 1865 becoming America’s 44th president two years after Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration January 20th 1868 who took office July 4th 1870 being America’s 45th president four months after Grant resigned because he could not win re-election against Ulysses S., also Illinois Senator at that time Ida Mapes Wright –daughterof John Francis Wright– born in Detroit August 16TH 1888….. died suddenly Sunday night September 8TH1988 at her home west side hospital Niles IL
Lansing was founded by the Potawatomi people in 1799. The city was named for General George Washington, who had been unpopular with the local Native Americans because he didn't negotiate successfully enough peace treaties. In 1847, Lansing became a county seat and was renamed after Michigan's first gubernatorial candidate, John L. Lansing. Michigan State University was founded in 1849 and Lansing became the university's main campus. The city hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics.
