This resulted in an initial migration by Europeans towards lands west of I-75 which would become Lansing along with adjacent communities including Clinton (today's Hillsdale), South Bend (later Stroudsburg) and Bay City (). One hundred years later more than 500 families still live in Lansing proper although much smaller numbers are scattered throughout nearby townships and villages within or bordering on Lansing Municipal Districts (). During its formative years as an American town, Lansing also experienced significant waves from immigration: GermanCatholics began moving into town after World War I; Poles came following World War II; Italians started arriving during the late 1940s; African Americans moved out after integrated schools opened up in nearby Dearborn Heights (); Japanese Americans went through similar changes during World War II before returning to their pre-war levels soon after hostilities ended Additionally, many students who attended local high schools left for larger school districts across northern Michigan starting around 1930 when enrollment rates plummeted statewide as factories closed down nationwide . Finally, many residents left for good between 1945 and 1990 due to suburbanization within Greater Detroit ; however pockets remaining within Lansing continue to serve as cultural cores for successive generations .
