Lansing, Michigan is home to the world’s oldest continuously functioning firearms manufacturing company and one of the most interesting firearm histories in the country. The city was founded by James Fenton in 1824 as a trading post on the Ionia River. At first, firearms were made locally and hand-gun ammunition was also produced. However, in 1836, Lansing became the site of one of the largest gun shows ever held in America when 10,000 guns were exhibited from all over America. In 1868, Michigan statehood was granted to the United States and Flint became its capital. This led to a shift in production towards rifles and shotguns at Fenton’s old factory. In 1911, Fenton merged with George Wesson & Sons (GW&S) and became known as The Arsenal Company. From here until World War II, GW&S manufactured artillery munitions for both sides during World War I and World War II. During this time period they also developed what is now known as “theBrowning Hi-Power” series pistols which began production in 1934. The Arsenal Company closed down in 1946 but it wasn’t until 1949 that Lansing finally got its own police department after several years of waiting. On March 15th of that year, fifty handguns were delivered to Lansing courtesy of Colt Firearms Corporation who had just relocated their entire operations from San Francisco to Michigan City following California’s prohibition laws – making these 50 pistols part of an annual tradition that continues today! In 1906 Lansing annexed much of neighboring Dearborn County along with most of Kalamazoo County to form what would become one continuous metropolitan area with a population over 2 million people today—the largest in America outside New York City or Los Angeles combined!
