Kentwood is a small town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan area. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first weapon flashlight was invented in 1892 by George Hennepin and patented on July 8, 1893. It consisted of an adjustable light bulb with a handle and was used to illuminate objects at night. In 1934, Weapon Flashlights became a registered trademark of Sperry-Rand Corporation. In 1865, Luther Vandross bought land near where he later founded Detroit's Cobo Hall Casino and Race Course. He named his plantation "Kentwood" after his home state of Kentucky. Vandross dedicated to its development a public school, beautiful park with Tennis Courts (now called Kent Park), fireplaces for evening gatherings, and an electric streetcar line that ran between downtown Detroit and Kentwood until 1925. In 1922, Jock Mahoney settled in Kentwood after being kicked out of Cleveland by prohibitionists during the American Revolutionary War era because he refused to give up his drink

The small community quickly grew and began to occupy land that had been donated by the local Indians. On November 1, 1847,Kentwood became a city under the jurisdiction of Mackinac County. In 1898, the town organized itself into a township. In 1954, Kentwood merged with neighboring townships to form the current municipality of Kentwood Township. The population of Kentwood was estimated at 2,500 in 2000 and has grown progressively since then. Many businesses and services are located in the downtown area which is home to several high-rise buildings dating back to the 1920s. Today, there are many cultural events taking place throughout the year including music concerts, art exhibits, street festivals and more.
