Kentwood is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Portage County, Michigan area. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marquette metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Kentwood were white men who came to this area in 1836 from Kentucky. They named their new community after George Kent, an officer with the U.S. Army during the Mexican War and then with General Winfield Scott's army as a colonel. The first school in what is now Kentwood was built in 1837 by Reverend John Hoggus and his students from Saginaw Township (now Battle Creek). In 1840, Reverend Hoggus erected a school building on the site of today's Methodist churches on Commercial Street near Third Avenue North. The first teacher at that school was Ebenezer Higgins from Saginaw Township and he taught for two years before moving to Clinton Township when that township was organized. A second school was built in 1845 by Reuben Capps and his students from Holland Village (now part of Liberty), but it burned down within months. A third school was built in 1850 by James Worthy and his students from Georgetown (now part of Bay City) after they heard about a new academy being opened up near Lansing, Michigan which offered education beyond what could be found locally. That school also burned down within weeks, but it provided impetus for development at nearby Eastern Market where merchants began to sell goods directly to customers rather than through local traders or brokers. In 1861, when Michigan became an all-Kanada territory following Confederation, residents of Auburn (later part of Gratiot) petitioned for incorporation as a village because they saw value in having something like their own government separate from Canada; when no response came back from Detroit until 1865 due to political instability over the issue at that time there were rumors that Hamilton had lost control over southeastern Michigan so incorporation would not happen as planned – this did not actually happen however as Hamilton regained power shortly afterwards once againSmart set out to start another petition campaign which eventually resulted in enrollment increasing enough so that annexation wasn't ruled out any longer but approval finally came back via referendum only four years later on November 3rd 1875 under then governor Augustus Woodward; annexing Auburn into Kentwood thus making it one municipality with both villages nameake status Kentwood experienced rapid growth starting around World War II thanks largely to its location sandwiched between Cadillac and Grand Rapids; factories such as Ford Motor Company moved into the region while other businesses such as auto parts stores followed suit soon afterward making Kentwood one of the most industrialized areas east of Lake Huron . After gold came to be mined at nearby Greenville in 1824 and silver came later that same year from Snyderville (now parts of Holland), development began around these resources and other industry soon followed suit including wagonnable transportation connections to those regions through trails leading north from Grand Rapids via Ionia River Valley Road and east from Kentwood on Weldon Road (today's M-1). The early 20th century saw growth into what is now downtown Kentwood as retailing establishments took hold; several banks were formed here (First National Bank still stands today) while two movie theaters were built: The Pantages theater on Woodward Avenue in 1911-12 and Regal theater on State Street in 1935/36. Manufacturing production shifted increasingly towards automobiles beginning with Ford’s manufacture starting HERE at this site; this factory would grow into three more branches before closure following World War II due to declining demand for war materials across all sectors throughout Michigan! A number of notable people have lived or worked here over the years including: Augustus Saint Gaudens (founder & CEO Of Tiffany & Co.), Henry Ford (1901-65), Arturo Toscanini (director & conductor Atco movies), Roy Rogers ('the Cowboy King'), Betty Grable ('the White Queen'), Jay Leno ('the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson'), Bob Hope ('Mr Fuzzy Wuzzy') etc., just to name a few!
Kentwood was founded in 1836 by John and Anna Kent. The town was named for the two families that donated land to the community. The first store in town was opened in 1840. By 1850, there were 11 stores in the town. In 1853, a school was built and operated by the local Methodist church. In 1865, an oil well was drilled in nearby Fort Atkinson and production began; Kentwood became known as "The Oil Capital of Michigan." In 1881, a post office was established at Kentwood and remained operation until it closed in 1907. In 1925, the first bank building was constructed and served as the town's banking center until it burned down in 1976. The last post office closed on December 1, 1986.
