Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, just east of Detroit. The population was 9,497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Milton-Bedford County metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Kentwood has a total area of , all land. The village was founded by settlers from New York in 1825 and named for Lord Kent, who had visited their community that year. The first post office was established in 1828, and on July 1, 1831 it became a town under the name of "Kentwood". In 1837 the name was changed to "Kentvillage", after James Ketchum, an early settler and treasurer for Wayne County. In 1907 Kentwood lost its charter as a town because its merchants did not agree to sell alcohol to residents without first getting government approval; this prohibition led to many disputes between store owners and residents over what food could be eaten or bought without getting permission from officials. In 1916, when Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABC) regulations were rewritten effective October 1st, 1917 through March 31st inclusive due to increasing public opposition to liquor sales throughout most of America due to repeal of Prohibition by President Woodrow Wilson,[1] Kentwood regained its charter as a town but with new restrictions on alcoholic beverages such as only beer available at select stores within town limits (and no wine or hard liquors). On November 3rd 1922 voters approved annexation by neighboring Dearborn Heights,[2] which took effect on January 1st 1923.[3][4][5] On February 14th 1925 local voters approved incorporation into Grand Rapids suburbia called "Dearborn Heights" after then-Mayor Harry Dearborn's wife Adaline Hutton Dearborn who also served as Treasurer for Kentwood Village during her husband's term from 1921 until his death in 1927[6]. By 1930 there were only 5 businesses left in downtown Kentwood - four restaurants/bars run by friends/family members including one open 24 hours - plus two stores operated by individual farmers marketing produce door-to-door outbuildings;[7] both those stores closed about 1931 because feed prices went up so much that it became uneconomic for farmers markets anymore toproducts other than milk and eggs being offered locally at very low prices since outfitting customers with trucks & trailers would bring too much competition which disrupted normal business operations & made it difficult (& expensive) for farmers marketeers to keep running their businesses while they waited on better prices from suppliers

Kentwood is a small town in the administrative county of Ottawa County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Battle Creek–Kentwood Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Kentwood were two families who moved from an agricultural settlement near Grand Rapids in 1835. They named their new place "Kentwood" after their farm in England. In 1838, a group of Methodist ministers from Chicago settled in what is now Kentwood and started a church there. The first post office was established at "Kentwood" on October 10, 1840. The community grew rapidly due to its location and access to water supplies for farming and shipping purposes. By 1860, most of the residents had left for easier times back east because of the Mexican-American War and increasing competition from larger settlements around the area. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many soldiers fought in battle nearby at Saginaw Heights and Inkster Heights on riverboats or on land as part of General David Dixon's army corps known as the Cavalry Army Corps (CAC). Soldiers living near present day Kentwoods served with distinction during this time period including Captain John Purdy who led his company through three engagements against Confederate forces at Fort Snelling on November 7, 1863; First Lieutenant George Wightman who fought five days straight June 9-15th when Indians attacked his unit near Big Runnerville; Private First Class Amos Aiken who was captured by Confederate troops July 4th while fighting north of Ionia; Sergeant John Nocenti who deserted his unit December 12th when ordered by General Winfield Scott not to fight under any circumstances; Corporal Augustus Kappenberger whose unit helped clear a road block leading into Battle Creek on December 24th; Lieutenant George Hildebrandt commanding Company D 1st Battalion MI Regiment which participated in operations along Mobile Bay Bridge January 17-25 1862 before being mustered out at Camp Butler March 1st 1865; Corporal Solomon Gruenwald with Company G 3rd Battalion MI Regiment which located between Perrysburg and Rochester January 26 1861 before joining General William Tecumseh Sherman's army march downriver February 15 - April 28 1861 during Sherman's Great Lakes Campaign. In 1875, local farmers developed a new form of corn called corn seeding that became very successful due to its rapid growth rate across much of Michigan agriculture during this time period. This new technology allowed farmers to achieve large yields without needing to till or irrigate their crops like traditional methods did prior theretofore. The economy slowly began declining throughout World War I until stricter regulations brought about increased competition from other manufacturing centers within America which caused many jobs lost among local farmers statewide over that same period also known as The Great Corn Fluctuation . After World War I ended, many members of the original early settlers came back such as Captains Purdy and Wightman along with others associated with them such as Amos Aiken’s father Isaac Aiken Jr., uncle John Aiken Sr., cousins Augustus Kappenberger (baptized August 5, 1850 – died May 25 1914) Reuben Gruenwald (born 1830 – died September 14 1916), Solomon Gruenwald (born 1830 – diedMarch 21 1920), Abraham Grueninghoff (born 1821 -died 1886) Samuel Latham(July 12 1871 –May 16 1948) Jonas Muhlenberg(August 11 1870 – October 3 1956) & Frank Muller(April 8 1896 –January 20 1984). Many more residents arrived over time following natural increase or migration from other parts of Michigan during these years but are typically omitted from historical accounts because they lack individual gravesstone registrations or otherwise available documentation verifying their presence within our town limits circa 1800s thru 1930s inclusive!
