Kentwood is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wastewater and Port Huron–Grand Ledge Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Kentwood were French colonists in 1795. They built a trading post here and named it "Port Huron." In 1814, the U.S. decided to build a fort in this location because of its strategic location on the mouth of theMuskegon River. In 1824, settlers from Indiana started to arrive in Kentwood and other areas around Grand Rapids; they called these newcomers "Grizzlies." By 1830, settlements had been established all around Muskegon County; some were named for places such as Boston (Kentucky), New York City (Manhattan), or Philadelphia (Pa.). The first post office in Muskegon County was established at Kentwood in 1830; it was called "Dearbornville." In 1835, James Nolen founded what is now known as Nolen's Trading Post near where he had formerly traded with Indians. This trading post became one of the most important commercial centers between Detroit and Prairie du Chien. At Nolen's store buyers could find everything fromguns and ammunition to hides and furs. Born into a poor family in 1822 near present-day Lansing, Michigan, Isaac Brockman began working his way up through education by learning bookbinding at home before starting his own business as an independent bookbinder in 1840s Lansing area.. He soon opened two other stores across the state before moving to Muskegon County in 1850s to open what became known as Brockman & Companybookstores which are still operating today under various names including Nolen's Bookstore Museum & Research Center located on Front Street South within walking distance of downtown Kalamazoo!
