Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, and is the county seat of Macomb County. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census, making it one of the smallest counties in Michigan. Kentwood was founded on a tract of land that now includes parts of Naperville and Elmhurst neighborhoods on the city's south side. The village first sprang up around an 1845 sawmill known as Kent Greenock or simply Kentville. By 1854, with the opening of a new railroad line through central Michigan, businesses had moved to what is now Kalamazoo Avenue and East State Street from where they had been living near the mills along Beecher Road east of downtown Detroit. In 1865, when US Route 66 was created as part of its construction across central Michigan, Kentwood became one of its original townships; it remained such until 1982 when it became part of Macomb County. The mill closed in 1892 but left behind a legacy including two schools (one for white students and one for black students), nine churches (five Methodist, four Baptist/Apostolic, two Congregational/Catholic), five stores (four general store-owned and three Merchants Trust Company-owned), two cemeteries (Canterbury Cemetery and Deer Park Cemetery), five contributing dwellings (all built before 1900), an agricultural Implement Manufacturing Co., seven farms with associated outbuildings plus sixteen individual sharecroppers', six hiring agencies for local workers during World War I ('Wanted Men' posters appeared all over town) and twenty industrial plants employing more than 2 million people during World War II ('Manufacturing Plants 8'); all but fifteen are gone except for a few grocery stores that have since closed or been redeveloped into high-end apartments or shopping malls. Since 2001 there has been only limited tourism activity as most residents rely primarily on their jobs in nearby municipalities such as Macomb Township or Wayne County which provide greater economic opportunities than does much visitation by tourists - something that may change soon due to plans by developer Dick DeVos to build an amusement park adjacent to his home park located just outside present day Kentwood limits on South Boulevard north of Interstate 495 close to undeveloped land used formerly by several hotels dating back to 1919 - developments expected to create some well over 100 jobs while also enhancing public access within easy walking distance providing excellent potential retail development should planning go forward as planned - this would be good news not only for visitors who enjoy using this area but also locals who take pride in their community
Kentwood is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,779 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Kentwood was John Biddle in 1817. A post office called Kentwood was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The settlement was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died during the American Civil War at the Battle of Little Big Horn. After the war, many soldiers from Kentwood moved to Michigan and founded Grand Rapids as their new home. Some of these soldiers also settled down and started families here; this led to the name "Grand Rapids" being given to both towns after they were merged into one municipality. In 1875, an act of the Michigan Legislature gave township status to all unincorporated portions of Wayne County not included within any incorporated city or village. This opened up much more land for development and growth throughout western Wayne County than had ever been possible before, which culminated with the incorporation of Kentwood into a full-fledged municipality on November 3, 1903 under its present name. The town's first mayor was Wm Currie (1860-1916). Other early mayors include Geo Hixon (1892-1900), Hiram Sibley (1901-1906), Chas Moulton (1920-22), Harry Wishart (1924-27) and Gertrude Woodruff Cooksey (1945-49). In 1932 Milton Wheeler became Mayor after serving two years as Deputy Mayor under Jno Kappes (1920-21). Wheeler left office after three terms due to health reasons but he remains remembered locally as one of downtown's most popular mayors because he always looked out for business interests while also trying to make sure that all aspects of life were run fairly and equitably without favoritism or political influence running amok! He is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery near his wife Gertrude Cooksey Wheeler following her death on October 10th 2004 at age 97 years old!
