Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the western shore of the lower Peninsula of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,811. The racial makeup of Kentwood was 98% White and 2% African American. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kentwood were French Jesuit missionaries in 1795. They named it after Jean-Baptiste de Kent, an officer in France's army who had been captured by British forces during the Seven Years' War and then held as a hostage at Fort Erie on Lake Ontario until his release in 1796. Kentwood was platted as a village in 1825 by John Saginaw, who donated land for its construction. It became part of Ottawa County when that county was created from portions of Wayne and Oakland counties in 1837. In 1881, it incorporated as a city under the name "Kentwood". It adopted its present name seven years later when it amalgamated with other cities within Ottawa County to form one large city under the new name: "Kentwood/Ottawa". In 1957, Kentwood joined with other municipalities within Ottawa County to create Macomb Township; however, this merger did not take place because Macomb Township includes parts of Detroit that were not annexed into Ottawa County until 1959. An act approved by Michigan voters on November 7, 1988 changed both names back to their original terms: "Kentwood/Ottawa" and "Macomb Township".

In 1837, John Sibley opened a grist mill which became the basis for many later industrial businesses in town including one that manufactured shoes for General Grant during his army campaigns in the Civil War. In 1865, Pemberton Paper Company built a paper mill which became world-renowned and remains an important economic force today. Kentwood's earliest residents were pioneers who came here during the early 1800s to start new lives and build homes near water sources and other resources. They started out as farmers but soon began manufacturing goods such as candles, coffee beans, munitions and fireworks according to their needs at that time. By 1900, most of these early settlers had died off or moved away so new arrivals came from all over Michigan to make their mark on this community. During prohibition era (1920-1933), many people moved into Kentwood because it was considered dry country with no opportunities for employment outside Prohibition enforcement; however most residents quickly left when Prohibition ended and those leaving gradually lost touch with local life until revived interest in prohibition caused them to reevaluate their attitudes about alcoholics back home again around 2003-2004). Today's citizens are proud inhabitants of this Midwestern community whose rich history includes various shipyards where boats are built by hand (the first boatbuilding plant west of Detroit), leather processing plants (including Western Leather), auto parts factories including Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep production lines (retrofitted from old Ford assembly plants) as well as numerous stores catering to locals and visitors alike - showcasing some impressive architecture including a towering glass building completed in 1909 at 209 E Main Street - while also continuing its tradition of hard work, family values &Community spirit demonstrated through annual events like Homecoming Parade & Pumpkin Patch Day
Kentwood is a town in the Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,369 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren metropolitan area. The town was founded by General George Armstrong Custer in 1871 as part of an effort to create a new village near the Battle of Little Bighorn. But because it was located on the edge of a wagon ride needed for military supplies and transportation, Kentwood never grew very large. In 1892, local farmer John W. Kapp organized a group to purchase land east of Saginaw River for what would become Kent Woods Park. The park became one of Michigan's first public green spaces and remains so today. In 1898, Kapp donated $10,000 to build the first school in Kentwoods history - now known as East High School - and opened it 59 years later on November 15th, 1938. But even with all these good things associated with it- including two fire departments (one from 1903), three churches (Anglican/ Methodist/ Presbyterian), tennis courts (1914), baseball diamonds (1915), swimming pools (1963), and a variety of shops- Kentwood's heyday may have come too late for some people who live there today... especially those who remember when there was no air conditioning or cell phone service!
