Kentwood is a small town in the Oakland County, Michigan area. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The first people to live in Kentwood were attracted to its natural resources, such as forests and hills. In 1836, General John Cushing laid out a road through the woods leading to what is now Wayne County. This road led to what is now Monroe Township and was called "Cushing's Road." In 1845, Cornelius Vanderbilt bought land east of present-day Kentwood from Peter Kedzie for $2 per acre. He named his new township after himself and built a house there on the site of what is nowSAYLORS GARDENS shopping center. When he died in 1865, his son Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt II donated another parcel of land east of present-day Kentwood for a school district. The first school in Kentwood was built on this property in 1868–69 by Reverend Simeon Greenough and Mrs. Lucy Stone Woodward (wife of Seneca leader Ebenezer Stone Woodward). The first post office in Kentwood was established on May 8, 1871, with Elisha Gibbs as the first postmaster. The name change came about because it had been decided that no one would want their mailbox near where they lived so they started calling all their other towns "Kentwood". It wasn't until 1915 when an expressway was built through central Oakland County that people began moving into this community from other parts of the county and beyond – making it one of the most populous places in central Michigan during this time period! On November 10th 1920, Clarence King opened up sleepy old Hays Corners just outside today's town limits with his newly purchased farmstead just south of I-96 off exit 3758A.. Kentwood is a small community in the Kalamazoo metropolitan area of Michigan. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census, up from 4,651 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights-Lapeer Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as an agricultural town on the east side of Kentwood Lake about twenty miles north of Lansing. The first settlers were mechanics who worked for local farmers. By 1878, there were ninety-four residents and twelve businesses in the town. In 1903, it became a village and had a full Council with six members elected by popular vote rather than by property owners. In 1912, the first high school was built in Kentwood and classes opened in September 1912. In 1916, a new shopping center was built and named after Mrs. Hustedt (the original owner). That same year saw the opening of what is now known as "The Gilded Cage" restaurant which served up fresh seafood to locals until 1978 when it closed down due to financial troubles. One hundred years later, Kentwood has seen some impressive changes: A new elementary school was built in 2006 on land that once housed "The Gilded Cage". It replaced an older school that burned down in 2002; a large shopping mall called "Century Square" opened on October 15th 2009; and finally two large hospitals were added to the mix: St Joseph's Hospital and Huron County Medical Center in 2013 - making it one of only a few villages or towns in Michigan with both hospitalites and physicians working together!
