Kentwood is a small, rural community located in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The community was established by pioneers in 1836 and has remained unchanged since then. The town was originally named after Colonel George Kent, who donated land to the village. Today, most of the residents are descendants of those original settlers. The history of Kentwood begins with its location on a bend in the Kawkawaga River. This natural landmark helped contribute to the town's early growth, as people could see and use the river for transportation and trade purposes. The area now known as Kentwood was first settled by fur traders and travelers from Canada during the mid-19th century. In 1836, Colonel George Kent donated 4 acres of land to the village for development. The early years of Kentwood were difficult for both residents and officials alike. Difficulty finding enough water resources led to frequent flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in what is now the town center. However, this did not stop locals from trying to make their way in what was at that time a rough environment. Through hard work and determination, though, over time they managed to build some pretty impressive amenities for their small town: a schoolhouse (1846), post office (1848), library (1851), fire hall (1857), Methodist church(1858), courthouse (1860), store (1910), blacksmith shop (1920) and grocery store(1940). Today, there are still some reminders of those tough times: a few trees remaining from when much of downtown was built; Pioneer Cemetery just east of town; an old mill on Main Street that continues to produce flour; and numerous gravesites dotted aroundtown – all testament to how hard these people worked during those early days. It’s also worth noting that today’s population has increased quite significantly since those pioneer days – making it one of the most active communities in Cass County!
