Kentwood, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan that is home to about 3,000 residents. The community was founded in 1871 by Cornelius Vanderbilt and his son Commodore John Vanderbilt. It became an incorporated city in 1903. The population was 5,964 at the 2000 census. The area now known as Kentwood was first settled by Indians when they traveled northwest from the lower Great Lakes region for food and shelter during the late 1700s and early 1800s.
