Kentwood, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Shiawassee County and is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Kentwood in 1814, when John Fenton and his family came from London. A post office was established here in 1833, and by 1840 it had 1,500 residents. By 1860 the population had grown to 4,000 people. The town was named after Captain Augustus Kent who fought with General George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars of 1876-77. During World War II much of the business district around downtown was destroyed by bombing raids as part of strategic bombing attacks against German targets in Europe which were codenamed "Gulf" or "Oroville". In 1898, the town's post office closed and it became an incorporated village. The population declined during the Great Depression and World War II, but returned to modest levels by 1960. The town lost its status as an incorporated village after it merged with neighboring Westland Township in 1990.
