Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 25 miles southwest of Lansing. The population was 1,574 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Kentwood were French missionaries in 1795 and they named it "Nantes" after their capital city, Nantes, France. It was then part of the Huron Confederation until 1825 when it became a part of the United States. In 1827, John Jacob Astor founded the American Fur Company there and laid out a town grid on what is now called Elm Street and Main Avenue. On July 24, 1828, he donated land to establish a township which became Kentwood Township on February 14th, 1830 under US Constitution Section 9(a). There are several theories as to how Kentwood got its name: one theory suggests that because an early settler found three large trees in centralKentwood which had been cut down for lumber by Indians during the French and Indian War (1763-1765), he named his new settlement "Kentucky." Another theory suggests that because many people from eastern Michiganigrated to western Michigan during this time period and encountered plenty of kentWOOD in areas like Saginaw County (now Kalamazoo County) where they lived or worked; they adopted this name for their new community. A final explanation suggests that someone who owned land near Kendleton Creek mentioned being able to see Straight Rock Mountains from his view property so settlers took up this story as their own name for their new community - Straight Rock Village being derived from this initial reference! The township's first post office was established on November 1st, 1830 with James Lunsford as its first clerk/postmaster. The original building still stands today at 104 Elm Street in Kentwood Township where it has been used since that time as the headquarters of the local school district.
