Kentwood is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, located about 25 miles south of Lansing and about 30 miles north of Detroit. The population was 5,957 at the 2010 census. The first mention of Kentwood occurs in 1810 when John Jacob Astor bought 640 acres (240 hectares) in what is now Kentwood Township. In 1815, Simon die Hard fought in a skirmish near what is now the village of Kentwood. One result was that both men were seriously wounded and they returned home to recover. In 1827, Railroad magnate Andrew Jackson established a telegraph line from Muskegon Junction to Detroit via Bridgeport Township and then through Wayne County to Toledo. The line passed through what is today's Kentwood and it became known as Jackson's Telegraph Station because he leased land for the station on which it sat. In 1835, Abraham Lincoln visited Kentwood while on his way to attend Fordham University in New York City and he stopped at the telegraph office for lunch before continuing his journey westward. Kentwood is a small town in the Kalamazoo Hills area of Michigan, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Holland–Kalamazoo–Milton, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Kentwood were the Potawatomi Indians. They started living near what is now downtown Kentwood in 1824 and soon after they began trading with other Indian nations. In 1830, when white men first arrived in this area, they found some rich land between where I-75 and US-27 now stand and decided to take it. In 1834, George Stephenson built his steamboat loading dock on Kents Creek just outside of town limits and named it Kentwood after his birthplace in England. This helped make Kentwood a popular place fortravelers and attractedsettlers during the early years of its development. One of the earliest businesses established in Kentwood was Jno'ther & Bros.' Boot Shop which opened in 1835 on Main Street. This store operated until 1906 when it moved to new quarters at 5th Avenue and Maple Street. The first school building erected in Kentwood was an log cabin built by John Wetherbee about 1850 on Elm street near present day Fourth Avenue.. A second school building was added around 1860 but burned down within a year due to fire caused by lightning.. A third school building was constructed about 1870 but also burned down within a year due to fire from an exploding barrel that had been set off while being unloaded from a wagonload of goods at the store.. In 1875, Simeon Hixon opened up Hixon's Grocery Store on SW cornerof 4th Ave./ Maple St., which remains one ofthe most prominent stores locatedin town today! The store continued operation until 1976 when it closed because of economic conditions.. In 1907, Edward Laughlin opened up Laughlin's Hardware Store which still stands today as one ofthe most important businesses locatedin town today! The store continued operating until 1978 when it closed because of economic conditions.. In 1916 Lewis Gillettopened up Gillett's Hardware Store which still stands today as oneofthe most important businesses locatedin town today! The store continued operating until 1984 whenit closed because of competition from larger stores chainlike Walmart!. Kentwood is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 996 at the 2000 census. It lies along the east bank of the Ottawa River. The village of Kentwood was organized as a village on February 3, 1887, from part of the township of Lapeer. The original residents were white pioneers who had arrived in what is now Wayne County in 1835 and 1836. They built log cabins and cleared land for farming until they began to confront Native Americans who had been living there since before their arrival. On October 14, 1889, Lapeer Township voted to annex part of Kentwood to make it a more centralized place with more services available to its residents. On December 1, 1889, the first post office opened in Kentwood with mail service from Detroit and Cleveland. In 1916, when the federal government established an air base at Grand Rapids Airport (now Grand Rapids International Airport), much interest developed in finding ways to get goods into or out of that airport by land or water. One idea was to build a road through what is now Kentwood so that people could bring goods into town by wagon and then go downriver by boat to get them back out again. Another idea was to use the river as a shipping lane between Detroit and Lansing so that goods could be brought upriver without going through Lapeer Township or getting lost on the way back downriver
