In 1850, construction began on what would become one of Detroit's most famous landmarks – The Grosse Pointe Bridge – which connected downtown with the village of Southgate across the Ottawa River. This bridge made Kentwood an increasingly important commercial center as traffic along Interstate 95 quickly doubled as access to downtownDetroit via this short route. Kentwood is a small town located in the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, Michigan area. It was founded in 1871 by farmers and lumbermen from Ohio. The population of Kentwood peaked at around 1,500 in the early 1920s, but has since decreased to less than 100 people. The town was named for Major General George Washington Kent (1777-1859), an officer during the American Revolution who served as a military governor of what is now Ontario, Canada. The town was first platted on November 3, 1871 by J.P. Dickson and Wm. Prentice with land acquired from the estate of John Sutter who had died in 1870. The name "Kent" honor General Kent's birthplace in England where he attended school before becoming an officer in the U.S.-Mexico War (1846-48). Lumber production began in earnest in the early 1900s thanks to improvements made at the Anheuser Busch Brewery and its subsidiary Detroit Lumber Company which combined harvesting forests with sawing logs into huge boards that were transported by rail car to different areas across America for storage and then sale or export. By 1925, only 2% of all lumber produced nationally came from Kentwood; however, it still remains one of the largest producers of hardwood lumber outside of North America due to its location within easy access to transportation network provided by roads and rails which allowed for easy shipping both inland and outland). From 1923 through 1985 there were also five schools operated within or affiliated with Kentwood; these are: Emmaus School District #1-opened 1915 - serves grades K-8; Holy Angels School District #3 opened 1922 - serving grades PreK-8; Cedar Rapids Catholic Schools #2 opened 1928 - serves grades 9-12; Stonington Heights School District #5 opened 1944 - serves grades PreK-8 along with part time kindergarten thru 5th grade services; White Sands Elementary School District #6 opened 1951 - teaches preK thru 8th grade along with full day kindergarten thru 6th grade services alongside Stonington Heights SchoolDistrict number 5). In 1985 all but one school closed due to budget cuts making way for private education enrolling children from nearby Battle Creek Township government aided schools like Holy Angels Jr./Highschool Academy which serve Grades 9+ alongside state funded after care programs! Today much like when it initially formed over 150 years ago, Kentwood is home to many families who live and work here together contributing greatly to local economy While some may have passed away or moved away over time they will always be remembered fondly through memories shared among friends & family
