In 1828, John Wirt (a postmaster) opened up a store in what is now the business district of Kentwood. At this time, there were only a few houses in the village and most people lived on farms around it. In 1830, two men named Cram and Potter established a sawmill on the river near present day Spring Street and East Main Avenue. This mill became one of the largest sawmills in Michigan and produced logs for export to other states. Around 1840, some German immigrants started arriving in Kentwood and starting an Evangelical Lutheran Church there. This church was reorganized as a Methodist church in 1851 and then again as a Catholic church around 1860. It wasn't until 1865 that Kentwood had its own schoolhouse which served students from all over town including those living on farms outside of town limits! In 1915, a fire destroyed all but one building on Main Street which still stands today as part of the old Village Hall complex (now used as apartments). The last resident to live in Kentwood was Mr./Ms.(last name unknown) who died on December 6th, 1966 at age 97 years old! The village had gone through many changes over the years but its namesake has always remained unchanged; you can still find someone who knows all about Kentwood through history lessons or simply by asking around!
