The name of the town comes from an Indian word meaning "haystack." The post office was established in 1825, and it changed its name to Kentwood in 1915. On July 4th, 1916, the first World War I Memorial Service was held at the Methodist Church. It attracted many people from nearby towns including Kentwood as well as troops fighting on the Western Front. The service was chaired by Reverend Halsey Kneeland and Rev. Augustus Allen of Lansing. In 1925, two-thirds of all manufactured products were exported from America through Detroit metropolitan areas; this included autos, appliances and other manufacturing products such as shoes and clothing items. By 1929 only 20% of all products were produced in America with about 60% coming from abroad. This decline began to reverse during World War II when Detroit's auto industry became one of the world's largest producers of war materiel for both Allied and Axis forces alike. Today there are few industries remaining that contribute significantly to local economies other than agriculture which employs a significant number of workers within a radius around 100 miles around Kirkland Lake State Park reservoir (home to thousands of acres dedicated to hunting).
