Kentwood was a small town in southeastern Michigan, United States. The community was located on the east bank of the Ottawa River, about south-southwest of Detroit. It is now part of the city of Flint. The first European to visit Kentwood were French traders in 1795. The town developed rapidly after an Act of Congress authorized by President George Washington created a township on December 7, 1800. naming it for General James Kent (1758-1827), who had commanded American forces at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1805 and at the Battle of Stockbridge in 1812. The initial population numbered only seventy people; however, within two years, construction had begun on a school, government buildings, and other associated infrastructure. By 1810, there were three stores and thirty-six residents living in what is today known as "the Township." In 1814/15 General Andrew Jackson's Expeditionagainst British Enthusiasm took place just upstream from Kentwood Bridge over the Ottawa River where present day Little Belt Road crosses it - this event probably helped spur economic development around here as well as encouraged settlement by white Americans fleeing Uncle Sam's tyranny during that time period. Enterprising farmers soon began raising corn and other crops along with livestock; by 1830 they had erected two churches and one school. With cotton becoming increasingly important as an export commodity following America's Revolutionary War victory over Great Britain, heavy industry soon followed – including a blacksmith shop built by local Methodists in 1825 which became one of the most successful businesses in town until its closure around 1970s due to decline in manufacturing jobs statewide). In 1840/41 storekeepers John Akins & Eli Whitney founded what would become Oneida Community School District #5 - one Of The early public schools opened outside the cities during that era! However things changed when both men died suddenly aged 50+/- years old less than two months apart just before their school started classes... locally born business owners like Heman Dirksen quickly took over their businesses starting with brokering goods buyers contracts etc., continuing until present day! From then through to WWII local merchants did not have to outsource production or compete with big box retailers such as Sears Roebuck & Co.; instead they could focus on providing quality products at competitive prices for their customers across multiple channels including mail order etc...
