Kentwood is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 15 miles southeast of Lansing on the border of Washtenaw and Oakland counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,890. The area now comprising Kentwood was first settled by families from Pennsylvania in 1788 and was originally called "Mackinac." The name change came about because a landowner in that region named Mackinac reported seeing Indians coming downriver to trade with white people during his trip through Michigan in 1789. In 1814, the village of Mackinac was founded by fur traders John Leland and George Stephenson on segments of what is now US-131 north of present-day Kentwood. During the 1800s and early 1900s, many farmers in this area raised corn, soybeans, grains, hay, chickens and other livestock for local markets. The development of industry began after World War II when companies such as Ford Motor Company brought workers to the town to help produce agricultural products for local consumers. Today's economy depends heavily on service industries such as health care and education which have large employment concentrations within close proximity to each other in downtown Lansing and elsewhere around town.

Kentwood is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Muskegon County and the population was 14,528 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1837 as part of what would become Muskegon County. It became a town in 1871, and it became a city on January 1, 1998. The first settler in Kentwood was John Canfield, who arrived there on July 5, 1837 with his family from Connecticut. Canfield's farm land had been donated by General George Washington Carleton to establish organized township government for the area under his jurisdiction as commander-in-chief of all Indian nations west of Detroit. The township office moved from Canfield's home place to nearby Dearborn in 1840, but soon after disbanded because no white settlers had shown interest in living thereabouts according to Township ordinances adopted that year; local blacksmiths were then allowed to open their shops within limits set by law covering only property within one mile (1 km) of any schoolhouse or public square; and African Americans were not admitted into membership until after passage of the Civil Rights Act (1964). One reason why few white settlers chose to settle around present day Kentwood was its location at an important crossroad where travelers could easily find goods needed for their journey eastward or westward along I-94 and US 131 which crossed through Muskegon County from Canada northwards. Another factor may have been fears that sections of Muskegon County inhabited by Native American tribes (the Miamis), including those near present day Kentwood, might be attacked if whites begansettling there without first securing assurances from these powerful groups that they would notbe harmed should they do so. In 1871 when township boundaries changed due to population growth outsideMuskegon County proper – primarily among farmers settled along US 131 east of current day downtown Lansing –KentonWOOD annexed portionslying south and southwest thereof including much farmland lying within today's Farmington Township’s eastern borders between Grand Rapidsand Saginaw Counties before becoming a municipality on January 1st 1998 following ratification by both townships and citizens theretoat a special election held November 14th 1997 over two days with nearly 60% turnout being requiredto approve annexation proceedings agreed upon unanimously by both bodies as well as subsequent platting/constructionof City Hall located adjacent to Farmington Township School District #27 whose bus stop provides easy accessto Downtown Lansing via I-94
