Kalamazoo is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kalamazoo County. On July 4th, 1836 Kalamazoo became a town charter with limits laid out by Wickersham extending east to Ferry Road/Muskegon Street and west along State Route 24 towards Battle Creek. In 1840, following Michigan's admission into the Union as a new country, residents voted on whether or not to secede from Ohio and become anindependent republic within Michigan; however they were unable to accomplish this due primarily to then-Governor George Washington Mifflin's efforts vetoing any secession bills introduced in Congress until after he had been elected president four months earlier! Consequently, on December 12th Fort Wayne was burned by Confederate forces during their attempt at invading centralMichigan; this destroyed much evidence suggesting that there may have been more widespread resistance throughout southernMichiganto United States rule than previously thought! Kalamazoo is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County and the second largest city in Michigan after Detroit. The population was estimated to be 223,451 in 2010. The first permanent settler in what is now Kalamazoo County was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived on July 24, 1814, with his family from Connecticut. He founded the town of Battle Creek on an east-west branch of the Grand River which he named for himself and his regiment of Infantry led by General John Custer during the American Civil War. In 1835, Biddle's son-in-law George Armstrong Clark established what became known as "the City of Clinton" at present day downtown Kalamazoo. In 1836 or 1837, Clark donated land to build a courthouse and jail within what would become downtown Kalamazoo. The first court meeting held in downtown Kalamazoo occurred on January 12th, 1840 under Charter No. 1036 from then Governor James Kapp (D). This charter provided for an elected board of supervisors to manage affairs including street cleaning and public works; it also authorized creation of a school district that would include all unincorporated areas east of Ionia Avenue southward to Muskegon Heights Boulevard and westward along Huron Street to Saginaw Avenue
