This would have allowed goods traffic from Canada and other parts of North America to pass through central Michigan without having to go downriver through Ottawa or Marquette counties; this would also have eliminated some shipping lanes used by Great Lakes ships such as those built by Peregrine Woodrow Wilson during World War I. However, while work began on the canal in earnest in 1848, problems arose with funding and engineering challenges that led to its abandonment eight years later. The original proposal for the canal has been cited as one reason why development along Mackinac Island failed to take off during the post-war period that followed; likewise, areheader failure to build new roads paralleling canals may have contributed to declines in agricultural production around Detroit during this time period].
