However, this abandonment did not stop other settlers from coming toKalamazoCounty until 1836 when Henry Ford began building automobiles there and named his company Ford Motor Company after him (although some sources claim that he actually got his start working on cars at another place). In 1840, Augustus Woodward started operating a gristmill called Woodward's Mill which became one of the primary mills supplying flour to area restaurants such as Ebenezer Eaton's Eatsville House & Tavern on Washtenaw Avenue (now known as Old Main housed by Eastern Michigan University). One year later, John Fenton opened up an inn next door to Eaton's tavern which became known as Fenton's Inn & Brewery which continues today as First National Bank Building #1 on Washtenaw Avenue just south of downtown Kalamazou
