United States forces burned down much of Mexicali while trying to retrieve this land from Mexicans following their victory over Santa Anna at Palo Alto in 1847. In 1849, when John Richardson built himself a small log cabin near present-day Southside Mall on what is now State Street just north of State Avenue, he called it "Richardsonville." He opened his store there in 1850 before moving downstream along State Avenue to use more room for market gardening and other activities that helped him become one of the first farmers in what became known as Washtenaw County. His store may still be seen today at 775 Wabash Ave., Suite 402A in downtown Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 56,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County and one of the five cities in the region known as "The Great Lakes City". The first European to visit what is now Kalamazoo was French traders in 1695. The area was part of L’Anse aux Meadows territory claimed by France but not colonized until 1701 when Cadillac arrived with 4 men on horseback to purchase land from the Potawatomi people. Cadillac named his new town after Marquette's map of North America which he had seen while touring that area with his friend and mentor, Jean Nicolet. In 1824, Augustus Milbank soldhips called "Milbank" anchored off present day downtown Kalamazoo and began carrying settlers as far north as Superior. In 1827, John Prentice became owner of one of these ships and started shipping goods between Detroit and Flint. He also began shipping lumber east to Cleveland via shallow water channels around Lake Erie. This early effort at canal development led to construction of the first section (the Eastern Canal) in 1830-31; it opened up access to Huron River for commerce and transportation within Wayne County from Lake Erie much earlier than any other region in Michigan. This period also saw significant growth forKalamazoo Township because it became home to a number of mills operating on different parts of its river system such as flourmills at Battle Creek & Saginaw Mills; dairies near Niles & Escanaba; tannery near Green Bay; copper smelters near Jackson Heights & Mount Pleasant; woolen mills at Batavia & Wixom; refrigerated train traffic into downtown Kalamazoo through Brownstown Junction
Kalamazoo was founded in 1834 by John F. Fitzpatrick as a small trading post on the lower Michigan River. In 1837, Fitzpatrick and his family emigrated to what is now Erie, Pennsylvania, and began establishing a fur-trading business. In 1840, they moved their business to the present site of Kalamazoo when they became the first permanent settlers in what is now Michigan. The town's growth was slow until the mid-19th century when railroads arrived and transportation became more efficient. By 1920, Kalamazoo had over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents.
