Metal Firearms in Kalamazoo: 1859-1920 In 1859, a group of men from Michigan settled on the banks of the St. Clair River in what is now Kalamazoo County. They named their new town after Simon de Montfort, Count of Holland, who had helped defeat Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo. The town grew rapidly and by 1870 had a population of around 150 people. By 1875, however, it had doubled in size and become known as “theguntownofKalamazoo” because of its proximity to suppliers for metal guns and rifles. Because productionhtml firearm manufacturers could not find enough metals to meet demand for their products, many traditional wooden arms producers also switched to metal manufacture between 1875 and 1880. By 1840, over 50 settlers had arrived in what is now Kalamazoo Township including some very early pioneer families such as Captains John Fenton (1789–1841), Abel Pinchot (1800–1846) and George Kline (1801–1872). In 1837, John Day established a ferry landing at this location which served travelers between Detroit and Michilimackinac Island until 1862 when improvements on both sides of the river made travel by boat unnecessary. day also constructed a gristmill on Battle Creek which became an important part of town life for many years providing flour for local breweries as well as goods exported to other markets During this time period there were several stores open including Bemis & Company grocery store which opened its doors in 1845 Martin Samuels post office began operations November 1st 1847 Kalamazoo’s rich history begins with its incorporation into Michigan State University District No 3 on September 15th 1870 through an act of Congress approved by Governor Cassius Mclntyre . On October 5th 1870 proceedings were taken to name our new campus “Michigan State Normal School” under Director Merrill…the cornerstone was laid by Bishop James Glynn on December 6th 1870 just before classes commenced….the first building erected at MSU was Old Main which still stands today
