By 1830, when Territorial Governor Levi Lincoln signed legislation creating Washtenaw County, Kalamazoo had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over 50 farms producing crops such as corn, beans, wheat and potatoes. However, by 1837 there were only 10 settlers living in town; all except one family had left for other positions within Washtenaw County or elsewhere in Michigan during that time period. The Panic of 1837 caused periodic closures of local banks which affected agriculture particularly hard since cash was necessary for buying goods needed for food production including seed corn for planting next year’s crops and other items essential to farming families across sections of Michigan during those difficult times. Businesses closed their doors until things stabilized again by 1840 when prices started to rebound from low levels due to increased demand from farmers because new lands had been acquired west of Shiawassee Lake while still being under Indian control). Kalamazoo was founded in 1837 by Captain John S. Kalamazoo and his brothers, George and Elijah. The town was named after General Anthony Wayne's victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers over Native Americans in 1813. The first settlers were men from Indiana who had traveled down the River Rouge to find a new home. They built log cabins, cleared land, and began to grow crops. By 1840, they had constructed a mill that produced flour, cheese, bacon, coffee, and other goods for local buyers. In 1846, Kalamazoo became an incorporated city with a population of about 120 people. It was renamed Michigan City in honor of Governor James K. Polk who had been president when Kalamazoo became an incorporated city. During World War II, Kalamazoo played a significant role in the war effort as it served as the site of several naval operations including Operation Neptune's Spear which destroyed Japanese forces in the Aleutian Islands;Operation Husky which helped liberate Alaska from Japan; andOperation Overlord which secured Normandy beachhead for Allied Forces during World War II
