The Panic of 1837 caused a severe recession in America which affected Kalamazoo as well as other cities along the Great Lakes region. Businesses closed their doors, leaving residents with little money to spend or buy food or furniture for their homes. Kalamazoo was founded in 1837 by George Stephenson. In 1847, it became a city and was renamed Kalamazoo after General John P. Kalamazoo.
