Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the Great Lakes region of North America. The population was 1,707 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th largest city in Michigan. Kalamazoo is the county seat of Washtenaw County and home to University of Michigan. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kalamazoo were French traders on their way from Detroit to St. Ignace on the Mackinac Island in 1795. They named their new discovery "Isle Royale" but it was never colonized because there were no navigable waters between that point and the mainland United States. In 1812, John Cranch discovered Superior Harbor and called it "Kalamazoo". The first town in this area was founded by David Levy on land claimed by Moses Browning three years earlier. It was called Isabella after Queen Victoria's mother but soon changed its name to Kalamazoo because of its location on Lake Huron (now known as Superior). In 1824, Nicholas Biddle established a ferry service across Lake Huron from Vandalia to Battle Creek so settlers could get goods transported downriver for sale or use at mines near Sault Ste Marie. This started an era of commercial transportation which would continue through much of American history. By 1830, Kalamazouans had built an extensive infrastructure including mills, churches, schools and warehouses used for storage and trade during dry season when water levels were high enough for navigation only . Commerce grew rapidly; by 1840 there were more than 100 businesses operating in downtown Kalamazoo with a total assessed valuation of $5 million . Growth halted during World War II as demand for war materials plummeted but recommenced following the Korean War due to increasing international travel within North America . Today downtown Kalamazouo remains one of America's most vibrant cities with many popular tourist attractions such as arts & entertainment venues like The Palace Theatre & Arts District while also featuring many small businesses maintaining vital local economies

In 1907, John Denny founded Denny Brewery in downtownKalamazoo and began producing large quantities of beer for sale throughout Michigan and beyond. In 1915 he merged his company with Armour Brewing Company forming one of America’s largest brewers at that time- Armour Brewing Corporation would still be headquartered in Kalamazoo today. One significant development during this time was World War I effort which led to increased production at Denny Brewery by utilizing advances in technology including open fermentation methods pioneered at Armour breweries overseas and made possible by wartime materials availability such as aluminum sheets sold courtesy US military distributors (channels such as American Bridge & Iron Works helped popularize these technologies across entire industries). With Prohibition repealed following World War II, Armour Brewing Corporation grew rapidly into one of North America’s leading restaurantiers while continuing to produce large amounts thereof for export - exporting beer all around the world before ceasing operations in 1978 amidst economic restructuring within its parent company; however Armstrong Brewing remains an important partof local cultural history dating back to this periodalbeit less prominently noted than some other more recent incarnationsincluding those associated with Ballantine Spirits Inc.; Priorities had changed since prohibition ended so much so that prior to 2007 only small parcels remaining undeveloped near original brewery site were preserved by Ballantine SpiritsInc., making it difficult(if not impossible)to conduct tours or view items offsite even though property has been subjectto market value appreciation over many years!
The town of Kalamazoo was founded in 1837 by John C. Lewis and David D. Herron as a trading post on the Black River. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two important trails, the Big Road and State Route 61. In 1847, Kalamazoo became a city and was incorporated as such in 1868. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its status as an important regional center for manufacturing and trade. In 1907, Kalamazoo became the first municipality in Michigan to establish a municipal sponsored library system. Additionally,Kalamazoo played an active role in national politics during the Progressive Era, becoming one of only three U.S. cities to have gone into full bloom after World War I (the others being Detroit and St. Louis). After World War II, however,Kalamazoo experienced significant decline as industrial production shifted from nearbyDetroit and Milwaukee to other parts of Michigan and Wisconsin. However, due to several initiatives launched by mayor Dave Bing in the 1960s-70s which aimed at reviving the city’s economy, Kalamazoo has since begun experiencing significant growth again thanks largely to its current location within commuting distance of major metropolitan areas across Michigan and Illinois
