On December 2nd 1830 Abraham Lincoln met John Pemberton at a tavern near where Kalamazoo now stands for an audience about Indiana Territory which resulted in Lincoln's donation for land to be used as a school district Hereford Township School District #5 located today on much different ground inside downtown Kalamazoo In 1865-1866 construction began on what would become known as "The Great Northern Railroad" main line through town connecting Chicago with Detroit via Mackinac Island Railway Station (now called Founders Hall) just south of downtownKalamazo On July 5th 1870 Kalamazouians founded "The Saturday Evening Post" newspaper which would remain an important voice for community journalism until its closure during World War II In 1903 city fathers adopted a new charter creating municipal government separate from Saginaw Township while still subject to township trusteeship In 1912 Kalamazouiana established herself as an independent political party serving as both mayor and councilmember before becoming defunct circa 1945 After years of declineKalamazoo made some modest recoveries during the 1990s2000s thanks largely to strong job growth along Midwestern Interstate Highway 10 between Lansing and Grand Rapids

Kalamazoo is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Kalamazoo County. With a population of 97,521 as of 2010, it is the fourth-largest city in Michigan and the fifteenth-most populous city in Michigan overall. The metropolitan area includes all or part of five counties in western Michigan: Muskegon Heights, Saginaw Township, Bay City, Flint Township and Isabella Township. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Kalamazoo was by French fur traders at Fort St. Joseph on the Detroit River in 1795–96. The area was claimed by France from Spain during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). In 1801, following its purchase from France, Michigan became part of United States under President James K. Polk; but with its initial population only about 10 people—all Protestant Germans—the new territory had little real significance until it was hit hard by both economic depression and natural disasters such as floods caused by Huron Lake's shrinking ice cover during winter months. In 1824 Kalamazoo became a village when four small villages amalgamated to form Grand Rapids; however this merger never happened because no one wanted to leave their home town – they just didn't want to be associated with other towns that were "bigger" than them geographically speaking (Grand Rapids had been founded as a trading post on the White River). separately designated as "Rochester", "Wolverine" and "Telegraph". It wasn't until 1868 that there really was an incorporated municipality called Kalamazoo when representatives from all five towns met to decide what name would represent their community better within Lansing County gobbling up every available technology company name before finally settling on "Kalamazoo". During prohibition era Prohibitionsteel production increased significantly due to demand for steel products exported abroad However much like many other aspects of American culture during this time period liquor sales didnt stop breweries were allowed to produce beer for export however once prohibition ended taxes were raised making it difficult for most breweries not located inside OFA boundaries to continue operating
Kalamazoo was founded in 1837 by Major General George Washington Cass, who named it after the Creek Nation. The city was first called Petoskey and then Battle Creek. The City of Kalamazoo was chartered on July 1, 1838. In 1861, the City of Kalamazoo seceded from Michigan and became a separate government within the United States. It remained an American city until December 31, 1967 when it merged with Lansing to form the Michigan State University District.
