They built their ancient village on the site of present-day Battle Creek Township, which they named after their water source, the Hidatsa River. He brought over some Indian employees he had bought from traders for his farm near Marquette; these men are known as "Fenton's People." In 1837, when Territorial Governor James Kapp created Mackinac Island as part of the proposed territory for Michigan, he included Jackson County within it. In 1848, during War of 1812 General Andrew Henry started construction on Fort Dearborn on Mackinac Island and by 1850 it had become one of America's largest military installations and was home to a garrison of 3200 soldiers and sailors! The fort served as an important strategic center for land acquisition in eastern Michigan during that time period; it also acted as a trading post for Native Americans selling goods outside the United States market because no other fortress could provide such good security against American attacks from then on! A small post office operated at first under the name "Pottersville," later renamed "Jackson." It remained open until1857 when it closed due to increasing competition from other smaller post offices throughout the county. Most activity surroundingtown took place outside of town limits where roads were not well developed or built yet. A few exceptions are: a gristmill erected by Job Wellman near what is now Schoolcraft Road (later known as I-96), a schoolhouse built forathan Sprague after he lost an election contest (now part of Park View Elementary), a blacksmith shop started by Timothy Sprague that still stands today (now occupied by First Congregational Church), two churches – First Baptist Church which served as worship center for local farmers until 1886 when it burned down and replaced with Mechanicsburg Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel built also on I-96 – both buildings were added to Listing #4 on National Register November 8th 1955 ), two residences - Mrs Goodspeed's house which still stands today while her son's home located just southeast corner Second Street & Third Avenue has been demolished (now used as part of Grand Rapids Community College); another residence - Sarah Goodspeed's former home now used as apartments across Third Avenue from York University)
