In recent years, however, there has been a trend towards decline in overall population participation within local communities throughout Michigan due to concerns over crime and social unrest which have plagued many Rust Belt cities since 2007-2008 . Despite these challenges, Jackson remains an important cultural center for all of southeastern Michigan thanks to its strong history and rich cultural heritage
Jackson was founded in 1807 as a town on the Muskegon River by Col. George Jackson and his brother, Lt. Gov. Joseph Jackson. The first post office was established in 1808. The county seat was moved from Jackson to Manton in 1838. In 1863, the state of Michigan bought the town and incorporated it into Grand Rapids County.
