Jackson, Michigan was founded on July 4, 1837 by James K. Polk and his fellow United States Senator John C. Calhoun. The town was named for Jackson, Mississippi, the capital of that state at the time. In 1847, the towns of Ironton and Charlevoix were platted in what is now Jackson Heights; both settlements were abandoned in 1848 because of a lack of population growth in the area. A post office called "Ironton" was established in 1850, but no mail ever arrived there due to the difficult road conditions from Detroit to Ironton. In 1853, Ironton's successor as post office, "Charlevoix", received its first mail order service from Philadelphia-based merchant John Dolan. The first store opened in Jackson Heights on May 15, 1860 by Wm Halleck & Sons Merchants Company with merchandise supplied by local farmers and merchants via wagon train route from Detroit to Grand Rapids. That year also saw the founding of the first college in Michigan when Washburn University began classes at Mount Pleasant Academy on October 12th under teacher Thomas Fenton (1801-1868). In 1861-1862 an important Civil War battle took place near Jackson Heights between Union forces commanded by General Ulysses S Grant and Confederate general Robert E. Lee; despite being outnumbered two to one Union troops managed to hold off their attackers until help arrived. The battle has been cited as one of the bloodiest fought during World War II and is considered one of America’s most decisive military successes since Gettysburg. While much progress had been made since 1840 when James K Polk founded Jackson Township on land donated by Stephen Foster around what is now downtown Kalamazoo Avenue (now Gratiot Avenue), white settlement was slow due primarily to navigation difficulties caused by deep water crossing points on Mackinac Island adjacent to present day Lansing.
