Jackson is a town in Muskegon Township, Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,493 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Jackson was Nicholas Crouch in 1814. A post office called Jackson was established in 1835 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. The area now known as Jackson was first inhabited by the Huron people. They built houses around 1800 on land that later became part of Muskegon Township. The first white person to live in what is now Jackson was George Prentice in 1824. He bought of land from the Huron people and built a cabin there. He named his cabin "Prentice's Landing". In 1830, he married Sarah Richardson and they moved to what is now Muskegon Heights. They raised six children there: three girls and three boys. One daughter died young; her brother took care of them until their mother could take care of them again. By 1840, twelve settlers had arrived in Jackson and seven families were living together in one large house on the east side of Main Street near where the current post office stands today. In 1847, Andrew Journell came to Jackson from White Lake and started an experimental farm with fifty acres ( twenty-four hectares) of land along Big Creek which he sold for $1000 to Colonel John Sibley who donated it to the township for use as a school ground In 1850 or1851 two men by the name of Cook set up a tannery on west side Of Main Street which they ran until 1865 when it burned down due to bad weather conditions . A blacksmith shop also operated during this time but it closed down soon after because no customers could be found Some other early businesses include a grocery store (owned by Wm Dennison) that opened about 1860-61; another grocery store (owned by Henery James) between 1865-68; an opera house opened about 1870 called "the Commercial Theatre", which functioned as both a theater and livery stable; an omnibus line service stopped running about 1888 because too many passengers would get off at different places without stopping at any stores before getting back on board again; four churches were opened including one probably dedicated either before or after 1871 - all with new construction - congratulations are not appropriate here! Church #1 opened December 4th 1861 while Church #2 only went up status on October 15th 1863 presumably because Reverend Elijah McCullough officiated at its dedication but church records actually list November 11th 1862 when services were held – curiously enough this coincides with local historian Everett Meeks’s assertion that “it [Church #2] evidently never did exist...There seems no good reason why these two Churches should have been given separate credit despite their proximity” While Methodist Episcopal services were offered alternately at both Churches prior to 1870 most likely due to denominational alignment within muskegon townships piety wasn't exactly high among Methodists so separate services may have been offered more frequently out of convenience rather than anything formalized . Another early business activity reported forJackson is playing cards - interestingly enough this seems not only unrelated but also strangelytimeless as well as being one example where official government records do not reflect something apparently taking place contemporaneously

The population increased to 2,247 as of 2016 and is currentlygrowing rapidly due to suburban development in central downtown Jackson and via new annexations from other townships eastward into Jackson's boundaries
