During this time period, much progress was made within the community including construction of a public square which still stands today called State Plaza; erection of a first schoolhouse; establishment of Masonic Lodge No 4; establishment of a hospital; and creation of town limits around which new businesses developed such as grocery stores, laundries etcetera In 1837, Nathan Palmer bought 2,000 acres north east near present day Elmira Road for $5 per acre ($0.50 hectare). He donated this land to be used for farming purposes only with no intention to turn it into town boundaries or sell it off piecemeal over time like other communities did during that era In 1861, future Governor George Wirtz purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) east sideof present day Woodward Avenue from Nathan Palmer for $10 per acre ($0.50 hectare). This land became what is now Wirtz Park which was named after him in 1865 when he donated it to the town This major development within town boundaries began what would eventually become one half century long process where many homes were built on properties donated by citizens while others were acquired through purchase or gift given by governors or other important individuals in that time period
