Jackson was a small, unincorporated community in the township of Antrim, Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The first settler in what is now Jackson was James Crouse who built a cabin in 1876. There were only five people living there at the time and most of their food came from local farms. By 1907, there were twenty-six residents living in Jackson. The community started to grow due to its location on the river and its access to water supplies. In 1908, it became an organized town with a mayor and council members. The town had two churches and four businesses. In 1916, it added an additional church to its lineup which helped make it more active than earlier communities that did not have any religious activity. In 1955, Jackson merged with neighboring communities of Northside/Baldwinville and Southside/Harrisonburg into one large town called Birmingham which still exists today as a separate municipality with its own government structure
Jackson is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Jackson County. The population was 34,831 at the 2010 census. The city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who was president of the United States from 1829 to 1837 and founded what is now Jackson County in 1796. The first permanent settler in what is now Jackson County was Nicholas Gage in 1796. He named his new land "Jacksons Township", after General Andrew Jackson who had just been elected President of the United States that year. Jags township was part of Ottawa County until it was created as a separate county in 1800 by Legislature under Governor John Albion Adams. In 1815, Genesee Township (now Muskegon Heights) was organized from parts of Jags and Ottawa Counties when Lansing Township (now Lincoln Park) became a part of Michigan Territory. In 1824, part of Muskegon Heights became Gratiot Township; however, Gratiot reverted to its original name in 1830 when Lansing became a part of Oakland County and Gratiot become part of Jackson County again on December 1st, 1830 even though it still lay within Muskegon Heights Borough which continued to be governed by Albany Township trustees until 1861 when all boroughs were consolidated into one large municipality called City Of Flint with Mayoralty status exercisable by aldermen who were also members of both branches of the City Council which functioned as an executive branch similar to what we have today with exceptions such as having veto power over laws passed by City Councilmember’s but no vote on ordinances or budget items which are instead sent up for approval by Mayor with final approval granted only if they pass unanimously which has not happened since day one despite efforts by some councillors to get this change accomplished Aldermen currently serve three-year terms renewable through election night like all other municipal officials except for Police Chief and Fire Chiefs ex officio members On July 1st 1907, the City Of Flint merged with Muskegon Heights Borough creating one large municipality called "City Of Flint" with Mayoralties exercisable by aldermen who were also membersof both branchesoftheCityCouncilwhichfunctionedasanexecutivebranchsimilartowhatwehavetodaywithexceptionssuch ashavingvetooverlawspassedbyCityCouncilmember’sbutnovoteonordinancesorbudgetitemswhichareinsteadsentupforapprovalbyMayorwithfinalapprovalgranted ONLY IF THEY PASSUNanimouslywhichhasnothappenedsincedayonedespiteeffortsbysomecouncillorstocgetthischangeacomplishedAldermencurrentlyservethree-yeartermsrenewablethroughelectionnightlikeallothermunicipalofficialsexceptforPoliceChiefandFire Chiefs ex officio members
