Ionia, Michigan is a small city in the Midwestern United States. It is nestled on the banks of the Muskegon River and has a population of about 42,000 as of 2013. The area that now makes up Ionia was first settled by French fur traders in the 17th century. The town was founded on what is now Grand Rapids Avenue in 1824. In 1831, Ionia became an independent city and adopted its present name. The river and natural resources have been important to Ionia since its founding; today, it is one of the most industrial cities in Michigan. Manufacturing includes trucking, manufacturing goods for food processing, construction materials, agricultural machinery and other products. Some of Ionia's largest employers are ALCOA Chemical Corporation (a producer of asphalt), GEICO Insurance Company (the largest insurer in Michigan), Oneida Copper Mines Inc., ABC Supply Company (a retailer with over 1,000 locations across Michigan) and Grand Rapids-based Saginaw Truck & Equipment Company.

Ionia is a city in the far northwest corner of Michigan, United States. The population was 16,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ionia County. The name comes from Ionians, a people who inhabited what is now Ionia Township in 1819. The first permanent settler in what is now Ionia Township was Nicholas Crouch in 1819. He and his family were followed by others over time, until there were only six advance settlers left when the town of Ionia was founded on July 7, 1825 by Major John Ligonier. In 1827, General George Armstrong Buell moved his army across the bottom of lower Peninsula to invade Canada and drive out the French Canadians who had been living on that side of the border for years. British troops burned down part of nearby Hibbing during their occupation and many buildings were destroyed; this caused severe economic damage to Ionia Township which lasted for many years. Although it took many years for things to improve within Ionia Township, by 1893 things had gotten much better with an influx of new families and businesses arriving from Detroit and other parts of Michigan. This led to increased development around downtown Ionia as well as new housing developments being built throughout town center including along Howell Road between Main Street and Woodward Avenue near Interstate 69/US 131 (the old routing). On December 1st 1916 residents voted 3-1 to incorporate as a village under the name “Ionia” after petitions from various citizens challenging earlier decisions by members of the Board of Trustees not to admit any outsiders into their township despite pleas from some residents who saw great potential for growth within their borders due to railroad access, easy access to education opportunities outside their township limits (in addition to growing tourism opportunities), etc.—all reasons that went unappreciated at that time given how smalltown life back then often felt compared with larger urban areas where people could see real opportunity for themselves if they applied themselves towards making their community something special rather than just living paycheck-to-paycheck without hope or dreams beyond earning a regular income each month like most people did back then… In fact one resident even went so far as saying he would sooner die than live in a smalltown again! In 1917–1920 two more villages—Lansing Park & Clarendon—were incorporated into Ionia but these too failed due largely because no one wanted them adjacent to their larger townships while everyone wanted access to all those same amenities that smaller villages enjoyed such as easy transportation into cities and good schools right next door! Eventually Lansing Park became home only to elderly persons before it too succumbed in 1996 following term Limits set forth by then-Mayor Tom Dickinson which effectively ended Village status for all but select few residents eastbound on Howell Road between Main Street & Woodward Avenue! All told since its incorporation over 50 different villages have been created within our municipality yet none has managed longer than 5 years(!!!) Ionia was founded in 1824 by Captain John Sellers and his family. The town became a city in 1851. Ionia was the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces in 1862, which resulted in the death of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
