In 1875, representatives from four villages along the Neutral River asked for annexation by Ionia because they felt their conditions were not meetable withoutCity status. On July 1, 1875, Ionia became a city with its own police department and fire department. During Prohibition era (1920-1933), many businesses closed because it was illegal to produce alcohol without a license. However, some local residents still managed to get around this rule by buying whiskey from bootleggers or smuggling it into state lines.
