When the first missionaries arrived in Ionia, Michigan in 1847, they were met with hostility and opposition. The natives were skeptical of Christianity and wanted nothing to do with Europeans. However, the missionaries managed to convert many of the Indians and soon there was a small community of Christians living in what is now downtown Ionia. The town's first school was built on a small lot near the present day courthouse. But it was not long before people realized that they needed more space so they started building larger structures. One of the most famous buildings in town is the Masonic Lodge which still stands today. In 1922, an apartment complex called Roosevelt Park was built north of downtown. It housed over 200 apartments and became one of Ionia's most popular tourist attractions over time. However, due to its popularity, several fire hazards were identified at Roosevelt Park and it was eventually shutdown by city officials in 1978 as part of a campaign to make the area safer for residents and tourists alike. But even though Roosevelt Park had been shut down, some memories from that era remain: For example, visitors can find evidence that existed during its construction including pieces of metal roofing found outside today's library! It wasn't until 1984 when Ionia finally got its own streetlights after years of planning and fundraising by local citizens. At that point, night life began expanding into what is now known as Downtown Ionia – a term truly coined thanks to Mayor Orville Ewing who proposed calling it "Downtown Detroit". Today Downtown Ionia boasts both an award-winning pizza place called Pizzeria el Piñero as well as dozens of lively bars/pubs enjoying live music all week long!

Ionia is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ionia County. The population was 21,868 at the 2010 census. It is a small town located on the eastern edge of Shiawassee Township, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Lansing and about 25 miles (40 km) west of Grand Rapids. It is also home to Ionia State University, one of the largest universities in Michigan and one of its six public institutions. The first Europeans to come to what is now Ionia were French traders who arrived in 1696 and named it "Isère." In 1721, General James Kieft established Fort Michilimackinac on an island near today's downtown Ionia after his victory over the Huron Confederacy at Battle Hill on July 8, 1721. In 1800, John Saginaw founded Saginaw Bay Company which traded goods with Russia through what is now Stokes Barrow National Wildlife Refuge. This area became known as Saginaw Township because British fur traders lived there when they set up their postulate ten miles (16 km) south from present-day downtown Ionia in 1807. In 1837, local officials renamed Muskegon Heights to honor George Washington Smith who had served as their Mayor from 1840-1841 and again from 1850-1853; he was then appointed Secretary of War by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. Smith's gift to Muskegon Heights was land that would later become Downtown Ionia and parts of northwest Lansing

It is the county seat for Ionia County and is part of the Lansing–East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Ionia comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where water courses." The site of Ionia's first recorded community was on a bluff overlooking what is now Muskegon Heights Boulevard in 1824, when an Indian party led by Tecumseh visited the area to trade goods with local farmers. In 1826, John Ladds founded Ladds Tavern on present-day Muskegon Heights Boulevard, which became one of the largest taverns in Upper Michigan. In 1829, Ionia residents voted to incorporate as a Town under the name "Ionia". On May 8th of that year they raised $5,000 (of which $2 was contributed by George Wills) to purchase land at what is now Southside Drive and West Side Road. This land would become home to their new town hall and other public buildings until it burned down in 1949. The town continued to grow until 1861 when it merged with Chippewa Township to form Chippewa County; however, because Ionia had not ratified its incorporation into Chippewa County yet (due to lack of voting representation), it continued using its own name until 1893 when it changed back again to Ionia County after becoming more populous within the new county overall. The city has experienced many changes over time including being largely abandoned during World War II due to shortages of munitions outside Detroit; hosting American cultural events like 'Halloween Havoc' in 1947; becoming known for its successful arts scene during the late 1990s through organizations such as Midtown Arts District and Marquette University-affiliated Institute for Fine Arts; and experiencing significant growth followingHurricane Katrina before declining slightly during subsequent years due mainly to population decline within Chippewa County overall since then though some recent initiatives have seen renewed growth there such as attracting high-quality healthcare facilities like Weill Cornell Medical College into downtown Ionia both permanent and temporary campuses while also creating a new business district called Midtown Junction near downtown that has attracted several hundred businesses since redevelopment began there in 2013 .
Ionia was founded in 1836 by a group of men from the town of Ionia, Michigan. The town was named after General John C. Frémont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from California. The community developed around a small school and store, and soon began to attract settlers from other parts of Michigan and Ohio. By 1875, Ionia had become an important trading center for the region. In 1907, the community formed its own city government, which lasted until 1959 when it merged with Grand Rapids to form present-day Detroit Heights.
