Ionia, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census, up from 6,912 at the 2000 census. The name Ionia comes from Greek mythology and means "island of the Ionians." It is located on the Upper Peninsula of Michiganshire in Midwestern United States. Ionia was platted in 1837 by David Wilkinson and James Watkins as a village on an island in the Kalkaska River. It became a city in 1896 and then a consolidated township in 1934. The current town plat was created in 1960 when it merged with neighboring villages of Homer City and Northville to form Ionia-Homer City Township. The first permanent settler arrived on Ionia Island around 1796 with Gabriel Ford and his family. They built a birch bark fence stockade around their small plot of land which they called "Ford's Fort". In 1801, Detroit entrepreneur John Fenton bought land near what is now downtown Ionia for $1,000 (equivalent to $102 million today). He donated his land to the town for use as a public square and named it after himself – Fenton Square. In 1813, surveyor George Stephenson discovered gold deposits on nearby Sihl Bayou which led to development of what is now downtown Ionia by local entrepreneurs such as John Danks and Solomon Littlejohn into the late 1800s into one ofAmerica's preeminent industrial towns during that time period under steamboats traveling down Sihl Bayou between Hollandtown Landing downstream on Lake Huron (the present day site of Gratiot Avenue) upstream along Muskegon Creek until reached shallow water located just east bank whereupon passengers disembarked onto flat bottom boats or other vessels delivered them across Muskegon Creek bed prior arriving at their destination – this area later became known as “Old Town” Downtown Ionia today including most buildings constructed contemporaneously starting about 1830s were built hereabouts; some were destroyed by fire over 100 years ago! Ionia, Michigan was founded in 1817 as a small village on the west side of the mouth of the Ionia River. It grew rapidly during the early days of Michigan's settlement, and by 1825 it had reached its present size. By 1850 Ionia had a population of 1,500 people. The town flourished until the late 1800s when railroads began to arrive and transportation became more important. In 1900 Ionia was merged with neighboring towns to form what is now Monroe County.
