Ionia, Michigan is a city in and the county seat of Ionia County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,968 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Ionia County was Abram Darragh in 1824. A post office was established at Ionia in 1827 and remained open until 1889. In 1907,Iron Mountain lost its status as aTownship due to mergers with other villages throughout Midland County but kept its name because it had been an integral partof their community since 1862 when it had been founded by settlers from Canada who wantedto avoid dual citizenship issues with America during the Mexican–American War era). In 1912 Cedarville became an independent municipality separate from Iron Mountain after voters rejected annexation byIron mountain even though Cedarville had more registered voters than any other municipality within Midland Countysouthwest quadrant (Cedarville did not have a school district).
