Ionia, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 31,890 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Wayne County by population. Ionia is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The name "Ionia" comes from an early French explorer's account of a group of Indian traders living along the lower Great Lakes on or about what is now Ionia Township (now Ingham County) in 1796-97. He called them "Isourieux", meaning "Lake Isourea." The first settlers in what is now Ionia Township were Methodists who moved there from Upper Canada during 1814-1816 as part of a military campaign to expel Native Americans from that region. The first post office in Ionia was established on October 8, 1824, when Andrew Wirtz opened a letter office at an existing store on Main Street. Wirtz named his business "Ingham". It later became known as "Ionia" after General George Washington's decision to move the capital of America from Philadelphia to New York City and establish Washington City Hall within Ingham County for that purpose on February 14, 1794 (the original site being east off present day Monroe Avenue). In 1834, John Prentice built a sawmill on White Lake which became one of several mills located around town over time including two gristmills operated by Jno. Matson & Sons until 1902 and three foundries: Chilton (owned by Theo.) Crouch & Sons; Perkins; and Currymanufacturing Company LTD.; all closed between 1901 and 1916 due to prohibitionism combined with technological advances made by Alfred Dunning at Dunder Mifflin Printing Company which would soon become Pulitzer Prize winning News Corporation). According to 2000 Census data published by Wayne County government researchers,[1] total manufacturing output decreased 27% between 1970 and 2000 while service sector employment increased 16%. Downtown businesses lost many jobs due to suburban development but some have since reopened such as A&P Supermarket (opened 1984), Ford Motor Company Pistons Division plant (opened 1987), Quality Control Laboratories Inc., Lighthouse Cinema since 1997[2], Grille Canteen opened 1974 also used as dealership for Cadillac Motorsports parts suppliers[3], Saginaw Little League had field/park adjacent too playing fields built 1912 also used for high school baseball games until demolished 1994 when new stadium open with park annexed into it.[4],[5] According to 2012 Census data published by United States Census Bureau,[6] downtown businesses have regained most if not all their former job losses however servicessectoremployment has remained flat or declined slightly over 10 years

Ionia is a small town located in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Bay City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ionia was founded in 1837 and named for Ionian Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The first permanent settler in what would become Ionia was James Grafton on July 4, 1837. Grafton leased 640 acres (240 ha) of land from the government for $100 per year. The original village site may have been near today's intersection of Huron Street and Cass Avenue. In 1849, Samuel Gregg purchased 640 acres (240 ha) adjacent to present day Ionia from Grafton for $225 per year. He built a frame courthouse and tavern which still stands today on State Road 7 south of the town center. In 1850, he also erected a sawmill and gristmill on his land which still functioned until 1914. In 1852, John Prentice bought 10 acres (4 ha) east of present day Grafton for $25 per acre from Samuel Greggs estate sale proceeds. Prentice established a farm which still operates today as Prentice Farms LLC., one of Muskegon County's oldest agricultural businesses dating back to 1865; it has since been merged into Dow AgroSciences Incorporated.. Prentice also donated land to build what is now known as Grand Valley State University across Huron Street from his home in 1861.. In 1863, George Stephenson donated 3 miles (5 km) west of present day Ionia 'the white road', later known as US Highway 131, to be used as an express route between Detroit and Chicago via Holland Tunnel.. This piece of highway remains one of America's busiest highways even today with numerous stops along its way including several cities in Muskegon County including Ionia; it is also considered a national landmark by both USA Today andwikipedia.. He appointed Augustus Bogue as the first postmaster at Ionia on December 12th 1870 after Stephen Hubbard resigned because he could not find sufficient postage stamps to cover all his mailboxes... Bogue served until 1898 when he was replaced by Wm Hargrave who served until 1906 when he was succeeded by Fenton Mapes... Mapes served until 1916 when he resigned because World War One began.; during this time there were no postal services available so residents had to send their mail through local farmers or family members.) On October 25th 1916 David Ladd became Postmaster General with responsibility for Postal Service matters following World War One that had broken out two months earlier.; Ladd organized USPS Casper Wyoming Territory District #1 & #2 messenger service providing overnight delivery only within 100 miles radiusof Casper Wyoming starting November 6th 1916 dispatching packages upriver from White Lake & Superior River ports

Ambler, a white farmer who moved from Ohio and decided to settle in what is now Ionia County. The first post office was established in 1850, and the first store opened in 1851. Ionia remained a rural community until the late 19th century when it began to grow into a town with a population of around 100 people. In 1907, Ionia became an incorporated village and has since grown further into an urban center with over 1,000 residents.
